Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 5, 2026
SpectArk is a local backup app. It runs entirely on your Mac and does not collect, store, or transmit your personal data to us. There are no SpectArk accounts and no SpectArk servers that receive your files or activity.
What SpectArk does with your files
- SpectArk reads the source folders you select and copies them to the backup destination you choose — a local disk or a NAS on your own network. That is the app's entire purpose.
- Everything happens on your Mac. Your files, snapshots, and the SQLite catalog stay on your machine and your destination. They are never sent to us.
- If you enable encryption, keys are derived from your password (argon2id) and content is encrypted locally with AES-256-GCM. Your password and recovery key never leave your Mac; we cannot recover them for you.
Full Disk Access
Because macOS protects folders like Desktop and Documents, SpectArk asks for Full Disk Access so it can read the files you want to back up. That permission is granted by you in System Settings and is used solely to copy your selected folders to your chosen destination.
Information we do not collect
- We do not collect personal information, usage analytics, telemetry, advertising identifiers, or your contacts.
- SpectArk has no login and operates no servers that receive your files, backups, or activity.
Network access
SpectArk's only outbound connection is the automatic update check: it fetches a signed release feed (appcast) from GitHub to see whether a newer version is available, and downloads the update if you choose to install it. This request goes to GitHub and includes only what a normal download requires (such as your IP address and app version); it carries none of your files or backup content. Backing up to a NAS communicates only with the destination on your own network. You can disable automatic update checks in the app.
Third parties
Update checks and downloads are served by GitHub, subject to their privacy policy. SpectArk itself shares nothing else with any third party.
Children's privacy
SpectArk is a general-purpose utility and is not directed to children. It collects no personal information from anyone.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated date above will change and the new version will be posted on this page.
